An Alabama birth injury case in Jefferson County resulted in a $16 million medical malpractice verdict. A couple brought a lawsuit against Brookwood Medical center for medical malpractice arising out of injuries to the mother during birth.

The jury deliberated for 10 hours after decided to find $10 million in compensatory damages, $1 million in loss of consortium to her husband, and $5 million in punitive damages.

The compensatory damages were for past costs and future costs for the plaintiff’s care and treatment for chronic debilitating pelvic pain caused by the birthing procedure.

According to an article in AL.com, the plaintiff “has gone from a very active woman to having chronic debilitating pelvic pain from a condition called pudendal neuralgia, a nerve injury suffered during the birth. She has to spend hours each day soaking in tubs and has had to have nerve block treatments and medication.”
